Young Dancemakers Company is available for touring in the summer of 2012, and into early fall. The Company, a completely free summer project for city youth who want to create and perform their own choreography, enters its 17th year in July 2012.
The unique ensemble of sixteen high school dance students is drawn each year from public high schools throughout the city, selected by city-wide auditions, to which they are referred by their high school teachers. The touring, free, colorful concerts of new, original choreography feature both live percussion, by William Catanzaro, and taped music. Costumes are by Jennifer Lee. The choreographic works reflect themes of personal significance for the young choreographers. The Company also performs a master work from the repertory of a renowned choreographer. The Repertory Project in 2012 will feature the work of famed choreographers Robert Battle and Sean Curran. The concert can be followed by a free participatory workshop involving the whole audience in the fun of on-the-spot dance-making, led by the Company.
Young Dancemakers Company, offering motivated urban youth an opportunity not otherwise available to them, is made possible through generous foundation funding, individual contributions and the Fieldston School, and this year the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Company members represent diverse social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds with one goal, to create and perform their own work
Please contact Alice Teirstein to discuss possibilities for a performance, or any ideas you might have for a collaboration. The 2012 tour is currently in the process of formation.
