Dancenow/NYC has become the dance equivalent of New York's International Fringe Festival.....But its affectionate communal spirit has persisted, and was evident in a Saturday matinee show at the Joyce SoHo.
The two jewels of the program were the simplest dances.
There was not a wasted walk, crouch or reach in ''Struggle,'' a solo choreographed and performed by John Kasten to music by Arvo Pärt. Directed by Alice Teirstein, the dance was created for her invaluable Young Dancemakers Company in a summer program in which city teenagers choreograph and put on a show. The quality of work is high and perhaps there will now be a Young Dancemakers slot in each year's Dancenow festival.
